UK Government Supports Moves For Pharma Companies To Communicate Directly With Patients
The UK government would like to allow pharmaceutical companies to provide patients with more information about prescription drugs, according to an article published in Pulse. UK ministers view the European Commission"s proposals positively - these proposals would greatly extend the communication permitted between companies and patients. Currently, European Law limits such communication to patient safety leaflets.

Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy Holds 15th Annual Connect Conference In Atlanta
Patricia A. Furlong, Founding President and CEO of Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD), the largest non-profit organization in the United States focused on finding a cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (Duchenne), announced that PPMD will be honoring United States Senator Johnny Isakson and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) with "Change It Champion" awards at the 2009 Connect Conference in Atlanta, Georgia on Saturday, June 27. Green Tea Chemical Shows Potential As Low-Cost Intervention Against Sexual HIV Transmission, Study Says
A chemical found in green tea might be an effective tool against the sexual transmission of HIV, according to a study conducted by researchers at the University of Heidelberg in Germany and published online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, AFP/Google.com reports. According to the study, green tea polyphenol -- called epigallocatechin-3-gallete, or EGCG -- neutralizes a protein in sperm that aids in the transmission of HIV during sex. The researchers noted that they "recently identified a peptide fraction in human semen that consistently enhanced HIV-1 infection." The study found that EGCG is able to neutralize the sperm protein, known as a semen-derived enhancer of virus infection, or SEVI. The researchers said that SEVI is "an important infectivity factor of HIV." According to the researchers, EGCG "appears to be a promising supplement to antiretroviral microbicides to reduce sexual transmission of HIV-1." The researchers said that because a majority of people living with HIV contract the disease through heterosexual transmission and that 96% of new cases are reported in developing and impoverished nations, the use of green tea in topical creams could be a "simple and affordable prevention method" (AFP/Google.com, 5/19).

International Society For Pharmaceutical Engineering Asks Pharma Professionals To Share Their Knowledge

ISPE, a global not-for-profit association of 25,000 pharmaceutical science and manufacturing professionals, announced that it is accepting proposals from pharmaceutical professionals for content that can be included in a variety of its educational res. "As a membership organization, ISPE truly relies on the contributions of dedicated and altruistic pharmaceutical professionals to advance their industry," said Robert P. Best, ISPE President and CEO. "Not only do these professionals enhance their credentials by contributing to Society publications, presentations, and res, but the knowledge they share makes a significant impact to benefit pharmaceutical manufacturing globally." ISPE is currently accepting proposals for webinar content, conference session topics; training courses; Pharmaceutical Engineering magazine and the Journal of Pharmaceutical Innovation articles; and technical document topics and materials. Submissions are expected to shed light on current, topical issues, and address knowledge gaps within the pharmaceutical science and manufacturing industry. In exchange for sharing knowledge, submitters will have the opportunity to network with, and learn from, fellow subject matter experts; gain additional experience and develop new skills; receive recognition from industry colleagues; and contribute to innovation while improving the efficiency of pharmaceutical industry processes.
