Patient-Centered Research Report Sent To Congress Outlining Research Priorities
Recommendations for how the HHS Office of the Secretary will spend $400 million in funds for patient-centered research, also known as comparative effectiveness research, were released by Federal Coordinating Council for Comparative Effectiveness Research (CER). The report, mandated by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, is designed to help the HHS Secretary and lawmakers improve the quality of care for patients, and provide patients and doctors the best information possible to make decisions about health care.

Three Rivers Announces Positive Results From Phase 3 DIRECT Trial Of Once-Daily INFERGEN(R) With Ribavirin In Hepatitis C Virus Treatment Failures
Three Rivers Pharmaceuticals announced positive results of the U.S.-based, randomized Daily-Dose Consensus Interferon and Ribavirin: Efficacy of Combined Therapy (DIRECT) clinical trial authored by Bruce R. Bacon, M.D., of Saint Louis University, and colleagues at 44 centers in the United States. The primary endpoint of increased sustained virological response (SVR), was achieved demonstrating that INFERGEN provides a second chance to those HCV patients failing to respond to standard, first-line therapy of pegylated interferon (PEG-IFN) plus ribavirin (RBV). "The retreatment of PEG-IFN/RBV nonresponders with INFERGEN and RBV is safe and efficacious and can be considered a retreatment strategy for patients failing previous therapy with PEG-IFN/RBV, especially in interferon-sensitive patients with lower baseline fibrosis scores," stated Dr. Bruce Bacon the lead Investigator for the study.

New Study Reveals Wide Variations In Depression Diagnoses Among Ethnic Groups
Whites experiencing depression are far more likely to be diagnosed by a physician than other ethnic groups, according to a new Consumer Health Sciences (CHS) study presented today at the 14th Annual ISPOR (International Society for Pharmacoeconomic and Outcomes Research) Conference in Orlando, Florida. The study reveals that 76% of whites with self-reported depression symptoms are officially diagnosed, compared to just 58.7% of blacks, 62.7% of Hispanics and 47.4% of Asians.

Mantle Cell Lymphoma Consortium Scientific Workshop - Report From Sixth Annual Meeting Now Available

Almost 60 mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) specialists from around the world gathered in Atlanta, GA for the Lymphoma Research Foundation"s (LRF) Sixth Annual Mantle Cell Lymphoma Consortium (MCLC) Scientific Workshop. Attendees heard presentations addressing several key issues including the biology of MCL, prognostic indicators, new molecular targets, chemoimmunotherapy, transplantation and novel therapeutic approaches. The MCLC was established by the Lymphoma Research Foundation (LRF) in 2005 to accelerate the pace of mantle cell lymphoma research. Attendees to this year"s workshop included: LRF MCLC members, including LRF MCL grant recipients as well as other scientific investigators conducting cutting-edge research. As in the past, this year"s meeting provided a unique opportunity for experts to report on their research findings and exchange ideas on how to best improve treatment options for individuals living with MCL. Those in attendance heard 17 oral presentations, viewed 9 poster presentations and participated in 6 roundtable discussions covering areas such as: Clinical Trails for Younger Patients, Epigenetic Studies in MCL and Cell Cycle Targets for MCL. About Mantle Cell Lymphoma Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a B-cell lymphoma that gets its name because mantle cell tumors are composed of cells that come from the "mantle" zone of the lymph node. Frequently, MCL is diagnosed as a stage 4 disease, often present in lymphnodes above and below the diaphragm and in most cases involves the gastrointestinal tract and bone marrow. MCL is a relatively rare disease, constituting only about 6 percent of all NHL cases in the United States (i.e., only about 3,000 cases per year in the U.S.). This lymphoma usually affects men over the age of 60. Lymphoma Research Foundation
